Three National Runners-Up Medalists in
Holy Family Secondary School For Young Journalist of the Year Award 2010
Two of my fifth year peers, Orlaith Halpin and Neasa O’Donovan, and I were recently awareded national runner-up medals in the Independent Colleges Young Journalist of the Year of 2010 award.
This was the inaugural year of the competition and we were three of the fourteen senior students who were shortlisted form the nation wide submissions in the Entertainment category. Our articles aimed to explore some of the quirks of modern entertainment culture. They explored the addictive magnetism of reality television, the public’s obsession with new age Z-list celebrity characters and the iconic extravagant music-diva, Lady Gaga.
Although, there was a tinge of disappointment that we didn’t win the overall category, we were delighted to be awarded national runner-up medals. We are proud to have represented our school and our county in this competition and now aspire to careers in the journalistic field one day.
Further details on the award are on our school website http://www.holyfamily.ie/

Victory for the
Holy Family in the Michael Rigby Jones
Debating Competition 2010
“That we will be sorry to see the end of our teenage years”
Not so much, it turns out.
On the 21st of January the Holy Family team of Aideen Leacey (Captain),
Lauren Treacey and Aoife Delaney faced strong opposition from the proposing
team from Newbridge College in this year’s Rigby Jones debating final.
The two teams had met back in October in the first debate of the competition, with the Holy Family team emerging the winners, but in the intervening time the College team- already strong to begin with- had improved significantly, so the girls knew they would have their work cut out for them!
On the final night, in front of a room packed with supporters of both sides (including a great showing from Holy Family students and staff), our team- with great humour, fluency and conviction- argued that no, they would not be sorry to see the end of their teenage years.
Aideen spoke eloquently on the great stresses resulting from peer pressure and its proven links to drug and alcohol abuse in young people, delivering the strong opening argument you would expect from a team captain and someone who had been awarded best speaker in the competition for the second year in a row. Lauren, as middle speaker, was bombastic and effective in arguing her case that the pressures of performing well in school can lead to a slew of other mental and emotional problems, including depression and eating disorders. Aoife further hammered home the team’s opposition to the motion, her decrying of the age discrimination that teenagers are subjected to passionate and relentless.
Once the captains had summed up their teams’ arguments, the judges retired to come to their decision. The wait was interminable, despite the great atmosphere in the room and the residual giggles left by the girls’ wit but eventually, after much nail biting and nervous checking of watches, they returned: their decision was unanimous, the motion had not been carried, and victory belonged to the Holy Family.
Huge and hearty congratulations to the girls for the massive amount of effort and commitment they have shown. They have made us very, very proud, the many compliments received on their composure and ability a testament to their work.
Thanks go to both the Rigby Jones committee and conveners, Colonel Donal
O’Carroll and Mrs.Maura Ryan, and the generous sponsors of the entire competition
the Leinster Leader.
